Leather is a by-product of meat industry.
The main sources of raw material for the leather industry world-wide are cattle, sheep and goats, which are reared specifically for the production of meat, wool and dairy products. Typically, the value of cattle hides, sheep and goat skins represents in the region of 5-15% of the market value of an animal.
The Association played a majore role in setting up of Common Effluent Treatment Plant in clusters where there are tanneries situated and always lead in pollution and environment related issues to keep the environment free of pollution .There are 13 Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in various tanning centers in Tamil Nadu.The industry is aware of its social obligations and the tanners are doing their best in construction and effective management of Effluent Treatment Plants. Happily there is no functional tannery in Tamil Nadu without being attached to a CETP/IETP.
